This class examines traditional methods for drawing the human head and features with a focus on achieving a likeness of the model.
Through instructor demo, lectures, and exercises we will examine methods to better render and capture a likeness of a portrait sitter.
We will work from photos.
The teacher will share the zoom link prior the class day.

Topics we will cover include:
- Proportions of the human head and how to get started!
- Rendering various facial features
- Materials
- Lighting the model for effective rendering
- Expression (if time permits)
Material List:
White Paper, A4 or larger.
Toned Paper, A4 or larger. This should be a neutral grey or tan toned paper
Pencil - 2H, HB, 2B, 4B
Eraser - Kneaded (also called a 'gum') eraser is most useful for this class. If you have more, a variety of different kinds of erasers is great.
Either of the following for use on the toned paper…
Black or brown or sepia colored pencils
and/or
Black or brown or sepia charcoal pencils (pencil style, NOT charcoal stick)
AND… you will also need a couple white charcoal (pencil style) and / or white colored pencils
Pencil sharpener
(Note: if you are using Conte you will need an exacto knife or retractable knife to sharpen with and sand paper, 150 to 300 grit.)
